New packaging system for The Coca-Cola Company is the real thing!
July, 2003 --In partnership with The Coca-Cola Company, leading transit packaging manufacturer, Arca Systems, has developed an innovative new packaging and handling system for its soft drink products. The Coca-Cola Company is currently introducing the system throughout its European operations.
The Coca-Cola Company is the world’s number one supplier of carbonated soft drinks. Every day more than one billion servings of the company’s products are consumed around the world. In the UK, the company has a 42% share of the carbonated soft drinks market. Coca-Cola Enterprises, the local company responsible for manufacturing and distributing Coca-Cola brands in the UK produces more than 2.4 billion litres of soft drinks every year.
The new packaging solution, based on the Arca Combo bulk liquid handling product, is designed to streamline the delivery process between Coca-Cola’s European syrup production plants and high volume users of soft drinks, such as bars, cinemas and sports venues. The soft drink fountain syrup concentrate, which is diluted with water on site and then carbonated, is currently delivered in 20-litre bag in box packs.
Arca Combo is a large foldable container specifically designed for the bulk storage and transportation of liquid concentrates. It carries a flexible liner, which is filled with the syrup. The version for The Coca-Cola Company, christened ‘Megabox’, is a 250-litre capacity, half-euro pallet container, with an 800 x 600mm footprint. The liner has been developed especially for soft drink products.
The Megabox containers are designed for use over and over again. They are manufactured from food-approved materials and have smooth internal and external surfaces, making them easy to keep clean. The Megaboxes will circulate between the syrup plants and the customers’ locations. The folding design means that they take up very little space during the return trips.
The Coca-Cola Company chose the Arca Systems solution for its new distribution system because, in addition to the improvements in supply chain efficiency, it is safe and hygienic. Due to the reduction in the volumes of disposable packaging, it is also an extremely environmentally friendly option.
The Coca-Cola Company is committed to the cause of sustainable development - meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Naturally enough it focuses its environmental activities on those areas, which affect the soft drinks industry. In the UK, the company is a principal supporter of the Tidy Britain Group as well as being an active member of the Industry Council for Packaging and the Environment (INCPEN).
The initial order is worth Euros 3.25 million and represents an important breakthrough for Arca Systems’ new European Fluid Handling Division.
“We are delighted that The Coca-Cola Company has selected our system.” Says Wiking Henricsson, Chairman and CEO of Arca Systems. “ This order illustrates the tremendous potential for our innovative fluid and fruit concentrates handling concept. We have high hopes that other global manufacturers, with the same need for standardised distribution systems, will recognise its potential.”
